What is Physical Therapy?
After the body begins to heal, the doctor may recommend physical therapy to help regain maximum self-sufficiency and overall wellness. Physical therapy allows the patient to restore the use of muscles, bone, and the nervous system through the use of exercise, stretches, electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, cold, heat, and various other techniques.
Some of the benefits of physical therapy:
Initially, the doctor will try to reduce your pain and swelling, and then determine the therapy to increase flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, and/or balance. The duration of the therapy depends on the injury or illness and the patient’s response to the therapy. The patient may perform exercises alone or with the help of the doctor. To increase flexibility, the doctor may assist the patient with exercises and stretches and the patient may also be required to perform some exercises/stretches at home.
